One of the things that you can’t really do with iMessage is see whether the person on the other end of the line is responding to your message. Other messaging apps, including Whatsapp and BBM, will show “typing…” status whenever the other user is typing a response. This is about to change, with TypeStatus 2 now in its Public Beta stage.
As the name suggests, TypeStatus 2 is a jailbreak tweak designed to let you know whether the person you are chatting with on iMessage is typing a response. The tweak is now in its Beta stage and is available for download should you want to try it.
Aside from showing the classic “typing…” status, TypeStatus 2 also lets you know when your message is read. The read status is a particularly handy feature to have. It is also very non-intrusive. The read and typing status are displayed on the status bar using a very simple overlay icon.
Getting TypeStatus 2
After being in Beta stage for a while, TypeStatus 2 is now available for all users to try. To install TypeStatus 2, you need to first add a new repo to your Cyda: http://cydia.hbang.ws.
Once the repo is added, you will find the TypeStatus 2 package immediately. The package is compatible with iOS 7 and iOS 8. You can install the package rather easily just like when you install any other jailbreak tweak.
After installing the tweak, you can access TypeStatus 2’s Settings pane through the stock Settings app. Find TypeStatus’s preference pane and you can access its settings as well as customize the way this tweak behaves when used.
For starters, you can set the display time for each status. By default, the display time is set to 5 seconds. You can increase or decrease this setting according to your personal preference.
You can also choose the animations used to display TypeStatus notifications. Fade and slide are the two animations available, but you can use to activate (or deactivate) both of them.
Read and Typing Status
Dig deeper into the individual Read and Typing status preferences, and you will find three options to customize. The first one is Status Bar Overlay; switch this on to see the status displayed as an overlay on the iOS status bar. You can choose whether to display just the status text or an icon by toggling the Status Bar Icon on or off. Lastly, there is a toggle to hide these notifications when you have iMessage opened.
Once configured, TypeStatus 2 works like a charm. I’ve played with it for a while now and even in its Public Beta stage the tweak works very well. I’m running iOS 8.4 and the latest version of Cydia. It is also nice to know that the person I’m chatting with read my message or is replying. This simple tweak makes iMessage much more functional.
