QR Mode: QR Code Reader for Your iOS Camera App

QR code is one of the easiest ways to share links, actions and other content visually. Users can simply scan the code and perform the action. Retailers and service providers are using QR codes to share discounts, promotional information and even lead users to a landing page where they can make a purchase.

Although QR code is not that popular in certain countries such as Canada and United States, there are still plenty of codes you can scan to gain access to secret content and offers. Most of the time, you will have to use a standalone iOS 8 jailbreak app to scan QR codes. QR Mode is here to change that.

QR Mode is a premium jailbreak tweak available through Cydia. The $1.99 Cydia app is certainly worth every penny, simply because it offers all the functionalities you will ever need to scan QR codes quickly and correctly. On top of that, it isn’t a standalone app. QR Mode adds QR scanning capabilities to the stock iOS camera app.

QR Mode is capable of scanning several types of QR codes and parse the content correctly, including:

  • Text
  • URL
  • vCard
  • SMS
  • Email Address
  • Phone Number
  • Location

It is also very easy to use. Once the tweak is installed, you can simply swipe to a new mode in the iOS camera app called Scanner. This mode is what you need to use to scan QR codes. The camera app will automatically scan the view for QR codes and recognize them instantly. A valid QR code is marked with a rectangle; tap the rectangle and you will be able to read the content or perform the suggested actions.

One question that I have is why Apple doesn’t actually include the feature in their Camera app, as this would definitely represent a way for the company to advertise, mostly because other providers haven’t done it yet! With the raising popularity of the QR tag, the first tech company to actually include a function like this in their default app will win a large number of customers and a lot of positive feedback from all of those who feel like using the QR tags at this moment is quite difficult.

This is definitely a handy tweak to have. Are you interested in using the tweak? Or do you have it installed on your phone already? Let us know what you think in the comment section below.
