WiFried jailbreak tweak fixes iOS 8’s WiFi issue

One of the main issues of iOS 8.1 is the WiFi problem which many users have been reporting. Although iOS 8.1.1 fixes this issue, it is not jailbreakable at the moment and the latest firmware that can be jailbroken is iOS 8.1. WiFried is a new Cydia tweak that promises to fix the WiFi performance issue on iOS 8 and 8.1

WiFried enables users to turn on or off AWDL/AirDrop support which is one of the main culprit of the WiFi problem. According to the developer, Apple’s choice of switching to Bonjour over AWDL is the likely cause for the WiFi performance issue. This is what the developer says:

I’ve narrowed down the issue to the use of Apple’s Wireless Direct Link (AWDL) that is used for AirDrop, AirPlay, and Gaming connections.

I’ll go out on a limb and say the WiFi issues are because of Apple’s choice of using Bonjour over AWDL and that, given the constraints of the WiFi hardware, this will be difficult to get right.

Once you install the iOS 8 jailbreak tweak, you can fix the WiFi problem by switching AWDL to off. To do so, simply open Control Center and tap on AirDrop to choose WiFried (AWDL Off) option. This means that AirDrop will also be disabled so if you’re a frequent user of AirDrop, you’ll have to keep it disabled although you can enable it again.

Best of all, the tweak is available for free of charge so if you’re looking for a way to improve the WiFi performance on your iOS 8 device, head to Cydia now and download WiFried jailbreak tweak.
